Fetal monitors are table stakes for any Labor room. Back in 2000, they weren’t, in our part of the world. Everything begins at home and we are proud to institute the first fetal monitors of our district, in our hospital back then. The culture of quality improvement that kicked off then snowballed into our hospital becoming the first under 50-bed hospital in our home state of Tamilnadu (India) to be accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH). Years later, our hospital’s laboratory became the first in the district to obtain accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Laboratories, in its category.
Other similar CQI initiatives that we have led at our hospital include the Manyata training and certification for Labor room training and practices; the Kayakalp certification for Hospital Infection Control practices; the WASH certification on Workplace Assessment for Safety and Hygiene and becoming a CAHO Center for Quality Promotion, to handhold other hospitals in the region.
Our hospital’s implementation of a few QI projects set the stage for our leadership role in enabling and facilitating such systems among other neighboring hospitals. Notably, the NHS-borrowed Early Warning Score project to identify and treat deterioration in In-patient conditions, the External Quality Assurance Scheme-led project to improve the integrity of diagnostic testing techniques, and more recently the implementation of the WHO Safe Childbirth Checklist all helped us acquire the competence and confidence to carry forward the work among other neighbouring hospitals.
For practising these QI initiatives to upgrade the quality of our hospital’s services, reward of a different kind arrived with the invitation to be a part of the District Quality Assurance Committee, Chengalpattu, Tamilnadu, India.
Dr Anuradha Pichumani, executive director, has been invited to participate in the ISO Technical Committee 304 – Healthcare Organization Management Standards and ISQua’s Person and Family Centered Advisory Committee. This has given us the opportunity to contribute to the continuous quality improvement of healthcare delivery systems on the global stage.
